Danish coastal protection initiatives

Overview

Denmark is implementing various large-scale coastal protection initiatives to mitigate erosion and storm surges.

In the ‘Nordkystens Fremtid’ project, Sweco has been appointed to lead a major effort involving the municipalities of Halsnæs, Gribskov, and Helsingør. This project aims to protect 35 kilometers of coastline between Hundested and Helsingør through beach nourishment. Construction is slated for 2027, following a design phase that utilizes drone and LIDAR technology to map terrain.

Separately, Frederikssund Municipality has launched a project to protect its town center and harbor from storm surges in the Roskilde Fjord. Moving away from temporary measures like sandbags, this permanent solution is scheduled for construction starting in September 2026, with completion expected in the summer of 2027. The initiative also incorporates urban improvements, including new green spaces and public areas.
