Fredy López Mendoza appointed General Commander of Peru's National Police

The leadership of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) has undergone a significant reconfiguration following the departure of Lieutenant General Óscar Arriola Delgado. Arriola, whose tenure spanned multiple administrations including those of Dina Boluarte and Keiko Fujimori, resigned amid intense criticism regarding the institution's inability to curb rising crime rates, including a period in August that saw 169 murders.

Lieutenant General Fredy López Mendoza has been appointed as the new General Commander of the PNP. López is noted for being the first officer to emerge from the unified PNP, belonging to the 'Los Pioneros 1990' generation. His professional background includes roles in the Anti-Corruption Directorate (Dircocor), Police Aviation, and the La Libertad Police Region.

Accompanying the new leadership are Lieutenant General Augusto Ríos Tiravanti as Chief of the General Staff and Lieutenant General Manuel Lozada Morales as Inspector General. The new authorities are scheduled to be officially recognized on September 16.
