Peru police confront rising violence

In early August 2026, Peruvian police forces faced a wave of violent incidents across several regions. Officers were detained, received death threats from criminal groups, and suffered weapon thefts, while police engagements resulted in fatal shootings and the seizure of weapons and explosives. An army patrol in civilian clothes also opened fire on a civilian truck, killing five youths, prompting public outcry over impunity.

The following day, data from the National Observatory of Citizen Security showed a sharp increase in homicides, extortions, kidnappings and other crimes in the Lambayeque region for the first five months of 2024. In response, the Ministry of the Interior reassigned the regional police commander, appointing a new chief for Lambayeque. A separate robbery captured on CCTV in Huanchaco highlighted community concerns about the growing insecurity.
