Free trade zones drive technological transfer in Dominican Republic

Free trade zones in the Dominican Republic are serving as critical hubs for technological transfer and specialized knowledge acquisition. Beyond traditional metrics like employment and export figures, these zones facilitate the integration of advanced methodologies, quality controls, and engineering expertise into the local workforce.

As industries evolve toward higher complexity—including medical devices, precision manufacturing, electronics, and advanced logistics—local talent must adopt international standards of productivity and compliance. Bela Szabó Padilla, executive president of Zona Franca Las Américas (ZFLA), notes that this process has developed technical competencies in the country that were virtually non-existent two decades ago.

The medical device sector exemplifies this growth; the Dominican Republic is currently the third-largest exporter of these products in Latin America, generating approximately $2.25 billion in exports.
