Bautzen Battery Storage Fire Evacuates 42 Residents

A large fire broke out in late July at a battery‑storage facility in Bautzen, Germany. Four sea‑container sized battery units ignited for unknown reasons, prompting a massive emergency response. About 42 nearby residents were evacuated to shelters, and the site was surrounded by a 500‑metre safety perimeter.

Firefighters used river water, spraying up to 5,000 litres per minute, and deployed drones to monitor emissions. No explosion risk or hazardous gas release has been detected, and authorities have advised the public to keep windows and doors closed, switch off air‑conditioning, and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Two nearby kindergartens and a local theatre were closed, with performances cancelled. The blaze remains under control but the extinguishing effort is ongoing.
