Daniel Chapo targets economic independence at FRELIMO conference
At the 11th FRELIMO National Cadre Conference in Chimoio, President Daniel Chapo outlined a strategic vision for Mozambique’s next 50 years, centered on achieving “economic independence.” Chapo argued that the nation must transition from being a mere exporter of raw materials to an industrialized economy that processes its own natural resources, such as hydrocarbons from the Rovuma Basin, to create local jobs and wealth.
Chapo introduced three guiding principles for his administration: “let’s work,” “economic independence,” and “doing differently to achieve different results.” He emphasized that economic autonomy is essential for national sovereignty and requires reducing external vulnerabilities through increased domestic production and productivity.
The conference also addressed critical security and governance issues. Chapo reaffirmed the government's commitment to restoring peace in Cabo Delgado, noting that security is a prerequisite for economic and social development. Additionally, party members at the forum called for intensified efforts to combat corruption and violent extremism, identifying these as major obstacles to the country's progress.
