French 2027 presidential election draws ecologist platform and Royal backlash

The French ecologist movement released a 208‑page program titled “Pour une prospérité écologique” on 13 July 2026, outlining a vision for a First Ecological Republic. Led by Marine Tondelier, the plan calls for a complete nuclear phase‑out, 100 % renewable energy, a “tax Zucman” on fortunes over €100 million, a green VAT, a 32‑hour work week without wage cuts, and the creation of a constitutional assembly. The document, approved by 95 % of the party’s federal council, also proposes an ecological social security system and a European federal jump.

Former minister Ségolène Royal, who announced her intention to run in the Socialist primary on 10 July, has become the target of far‑right criticism linking her to Algeria. Critics allege she is influenced by the Algeria‑France rapprochement, citing her presidency of the France‑Algerie association, visits to Algiers, and calls for the return of archives and nuclear test records. The campaign against her references alleged Algerian support and uses a poll commissioned by media hostile to Algeria to argue for suspending Algerian visas. Royal’s campaign emphasizes climate, energy, purchasing power and violence prevention, rejecting any claim of Algerian backing.
