French audiovisual exports decline significantly in 2025

French audiovisual exports experienced a significant decline in 2025, falling to €282.7 million, a 28.1% decrease from the record high of €393 million in 2024. According to reports from the CNC and Unifrance, international sales specifically dropped by 21.6% to €164.3 million, reaching levels not seen since 2015.

Industry experts attribute this downturn to a difficult economic climate. Broadcasters are reducing financial commitments due to declining advertising revenue, while streaming services (SVOD and AVOD) are rationalizing investments by prioritizing local content. This has led to a more selective purchasing environment where buyers focus on proven successes to avoid risk.

Despite the overall decline, fiction remains the leading export genre for the fourth consecutive year, driven by crime series. Documentaries hold the second position, while animation has entered the top three for the first time. Unifrance President Gilles Pélisson noted that current figures may not fully reflect the market's scale, as streaming platforms do not share comprehensive viewership data.
