French audiovisual export market trends

Overview

French audiovisual exports saw a significant downturn in 2025, falling to €282.7 million, which represents a 28.1% decrease from the previous year’s record of €393 million. International sales specifically dropped by 21.6% to €164.3 million, a level not reached since 2015.

Industry experts suggest the decline is due to a difficult economic climate. Broadcasters are cutting financial commitments as advertising revenue falls, while streaming services are rationalizing investments by prioritizing local content. This has created a selective market where buyers focus on proven successes to mitigate risk.

While the sector faces challenges, fiction remains the primary export genre, led by crime series. Documentaries hold the second position, and animation has entered the top three for the first time. Unifrance President Gilles Pélisson noted that current figures might not fully capture the market's scale because streaming platforms do not share comprehensive viewership data.
