French authorities launch manhunt after British retiree murdered in Verlus
French authorities have launched a murder investigation and a manhunt following the death of an 85-year-old British retiree, identified as John A., in the village of Verlus near Toulouse.
The victim was found at his home on the outskirts of the village after suffering what investigators described as ‘very violent blows’ to the face and serious head injuries. The incident occurred while the victim was alone, as his wife was in the hospital.
Police were alerted after observing two men driving a stolen Kia erratically. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants fled on foot. Subsequent investigation led police to the victim's residence, where they discovered the body and signs of a struggle.
While the motive remains unclear, investigators are looking into whether the attack was a robbery or driven by other criminal intent. The Mayor of Verlus, Jean Menvielle, expressed the community's shock, noting that the victim was a popular and friendly resident who had lived in the area for approximately 20 years.
