Two men indicted in death of British retiree in Verlus

French authorities have launched a murder investigation and a manhunt following the death of a British retiree in Verlus, near Toulouse.

The victim, identified as an 84-year-old British national, was found at his home with serious head injuries and what investigators described as ‘very violent blows’ to the face. The body was discovered outside the residence between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Police were alerted to the situation after a vehicle pursuit in Mont-de-Marsan involving two individuals who refused to stop and subsequently fled on foot. Investigators discovered the abandoned vehicle belonged to the victim and found signs of a struggle at his residence, where the door had been left open.

As of October 2026, two men, aged 32 and 26, have been indicted and placed in detention. The Agen prosecutor’s office stated the investigation is focused on ‘theft preceded, accompanied, or followed by violence resulting in death.’ The 32-year-old suspect reportedly has a criminal record including 21 previous convictions, primarily for theft.
