French carrier Charles de Gaulle returns to Toulon after US‑Iran ceasefire
President Emmanuel Macron announced on X that the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is sailing back to its home port in Toulon. The decision follows the cease‑fire agreement signed on 17 June between the United States and Iran, which reduced tensions that had prompted the carrier’s deployment to the Middle East earlier this year.
While the carrier withdraws, France keeps two mine‑clearance vessels, two frigates and a maritime patrol aircraft on station in the Strait of Hormuz. These assets are intended to support de‑mining operations and ensure the safety of commercial shipping, in cooperation with partners such as Oman and other NATO allies. The return to Toulon will allow for scheduled maintenance, crew training and logistical work on the flagship.
