French carrier Charles de Gaulle returns to Toulon while minehunters stay in Hormuz
President Emmanuel Macron announced that the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will sail back to its home port in Toulon after nearly two months of deployment near the Strait of Hormuz. The carrier’s mine‑hunters and escort units will remain in the area to continue navigation‑safety operations.
The move follows a reduction in tensions linked to the interim agreement between the United States and Iran. Britain, France and Oman issued a joint statement confirming cooperation to secure Omani waters and to guarantee safe passage for all vessels, and said they are prepared to launch a broader multinational mission if needed. The strait was described as a vital artery of global trade.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister warned that the Hormuz is not a playground for extra‑regional powers and that Tehran will not permit any expansion of French military presence under the pretext of security. Nevertheless, the French mine‑hunters and other assets will stay on standby to work with regional partners.
