French Cinema Attendance Jumps 14.6% in June, Spotlight on Summer Animation Line‑up

In June 2026 French movie theatres recorded 13.04 million admissions, a 14.6 % increase over June 2025 and the second‑best June since 2013. The rise is linked to the success of the annual Fête du cinéma, which posted its second‑best performance since the event began in 1985. Year‑to‑date, 90.11 million tickets have been sold, up 19.7 % on a yearly basis. The domestic box‑office was led by Toy Story 5 with 167,700 entries on its opening day, followed by Minions, Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, and the horror title Backrooms. French film La Bataille De Gaulle – L’âge de fer took second place, while the home‑grown comedy Marsupilami topped the year‑to‑date tally with over 6 million spectators.

Separately, the French animation sector is being highlighted with five summer releases: *In Waves*, *Arco*, *Flow*, *Amélie*, and *La Métaphysique des tubes*. France is now recognised as Europe’s leading animation powerhouse, supported by schools such as Gobelins, École Méliès and La Poudrière and around 120 studios. These films showcase the diversity and artistic ambition of contemporary French animation, positioning the country alongside Japan in the global market.
