French Driving Licence Process: Preparation and Psychotechnical Test
Obtaining a French category B driving licence involves several steps. Candidates must first complete the administrative formalities, submit required documents such as identity proof and a residence certificate, and choose an appropriate driving school or opt for supervised driving. Effective study of the road code is recommended, with daily short sessions, use of mobile apps or online platforms, and regular mock exams to identify weak spots. Stress‑management techniques and a well‑structured schedule help keep motivation high through the practical and theoretical exams.
When a licence is annulled by a court, lost due to total point depletion, or suspended for six months or more, French drivers are required to undergo a psychotechnical test. The test, regulated by article R224‑21 of the Code de la route and updated by a July 2025 decree, consists of a brief interview with a psychologist followed by computer‑based exercises evaluating hand stability, attention, reflexes, motor coordination and visual logic. About 150,000 drivers take the exam each year, with costs ranging from €65 to €150; results are valid for six months. The AAAEP company is developing AI‑driven tools to support the administration of these examinations.
