French Education Ministry Announces Funding for Heat‑Vulnerable Schools

The French education union SNALC warned that schools are ill‑prepared for recurring heatwaves, citing inadequate facilities, rising fuel costs, staffing shortages and stagnant wages. It called for dignified working conditions and better compensation.

In response, Education Minister Édouard Geffray told the Senate that a precise list of about 2,500‑3,000 schools most vulnerable to extreme heat will be handed to the government on 15 July. Each listed school will receive a €10,000 grant to create a cooler “relief space” and will also be reimbursed €400 for ventilation equipment from an EDF‑funded envelope. The minister pledged to publish all data openly and said the government will adapt school schedules if necessary to protect students and staff during hot periods.
