French Education Ministry targets vocabulary mastery to improve literacy

The French Ministry of National Education is prioritizing language mastery to combat academic inequality. Education Minister Édouard Geffray has emphasized that children require a robust vocabulary to express thought, setting a target for students to acquire at least 2,500 words by the end of kindergarten (grande section).

This initiative aims to improve reading comprehension and written production. Experts note that a rich lexicon is essential for navigating the complexities of the French language, which is described as an ‘opaque language’ due to the discrepancy between its 26 letters, 35 sounds, and approximately 150 different spellings.

Concerns regarding literacy levels persist, with statistics showing that by the end of CM2, nearly 50% of students do not meet minimum reading objectives. Educators and pedagogues, such as Céline Alvarez, advocate for early reading instruction, citing neuroscientific evidence that brain plasticity between ages 3 and 5 provides an optimal window for developing reading skills.
