French farmers struggle to claim emergency aid after extreme summer weather

French farmers are facing difficulties in accessing government emergency aid following a summer of devastating droughts and heatwaves. Despite the availability of financial support, many producers are prioritizing essential seasonal tasks, such as harvesting apples and chestnuts or managing livestock, over administrative procedures.

The Mutualité Sociale Agricole (MSA) has launched an intensive outreach campaign, including thousands of calls, emails, and SMS messages, to inform members of available assistance. This support includes psychological aid, social security contribution deferrals, and emergency funds released to offset rising costs for non-road diesel and fertilizers.

Data indicates that while significant funds have been allocated, uptake has been slow. Between April and August, 74 million euros were distributed for diesel costs from a 250 million euro fund. Additionally, 17 million euros in fertilizer aid has been requested from a 145 million euro envelope that must be utilized before the end of 2026 to avoid returning funds to the European Union.
