French firefighters face funding and health crises
French firefighting services are facing critical challenges regarding both funding and occupational health. François Sauvadet, President of Départements de France, has warned that the system has reached a “point of rupture” due to intensifying climate threats. He is calling for a complete overhaul of the SDIS (Departmental Fire and Rescue Services) financing system, which has remained unchanged for over 20 years, and is advocating for a multi-year capacity pact and increased support for European water-bombing aircraft.
Simultaneously, concerns are rising regarding the health of firefighters exposed to toxic smoke during forest fires. Reports from the CNRACL and Anses highlight that exposure to irritants and carcinogenic retardants can lead to chronic pulmonary diseases, respiratory symptoms, and increased cancer mortality. Some professionals have compared the potential long-term health crisis to the asbestos scandal, noting a lack of sufficient studies and recognition of these occupational illnesses.
