Lebanon seeks international security alternatives ahead of UNIFIL withdrawal
Lebanese officials and international leaders are addressing the security implications of the upcoming UNIFIL withdrawal, scheduled for December 31, 2026. Speaker Nabih Berri and other Lebanese leaders have emphasized the need for a continuous international presence to prevent a security vacuum in southern Lebanon and to ensure the implementation of UN Resolution 1701.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has met with Lebanese leadership to discuss post-UNIFIL arrangements. France has expressed readiness to help shape international frameworks to maintain stability. In response to the shifting security landscape, the European Union has adopted a decision to establish a new EU Support Mission to Lebanon with an initial three-year mandate. However, this mission will not replace UNIFIL, as it will not conduct field operations in the south or engage in disarmament and monitoring tasks.
Local communities in southern Lebanon, such as the village of Ain Ebel, have expressed significant concerns regarding the withdrawal. Residents fear the loss of livelihoods, as many depend on UNIFIL for employment, and worry about the potential for increased instability and restricted movement in border areas.
