Israel‑Lebanon pull‑back, US‑Iran tension, Gulf flare‑up

Overview

The U.S. military delegation that arrived in Beirut on 11 July 2026 met with the Lebanese army to design the mechanism for the first “pilot zone” under the 26 June 2024 framework. Israeli strikes that week hit al‑Mansouri, injuring seven civilians. The United Nations OCHA reports that more than 732,000 of the displaced have returned, while about 430,000 remain displaced.

Lebanese President Joseph Avn, who will travel to Washington on 21 July, said he will ask President Donald Trump to press Israel for an immediate pull‑out from the two pilot zones, the return of displaced residents and prisoners, and reconstruction assistance. In Rome, the sixth round of Lebanon‑Israel talks (15‑16 July) focused on implementing the framework, Hezbollah’s disarmament and Israeli withdrawal, with the U.S. military team present. Hezbollah continues to reject the agreement.

On the broader regional front, Trump asserted that Israel would not exist without his and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s intervention and warned that Iran is weeks from a nuclear weapon. The White House framed ongoing U.S. strikes—now in a third consecutive day—against Iranian military, naval and nuclear facilities as essential to protect navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and to prevent a nuclear breakthrough.

In parallel, Trump and Netanyahu are slated to meet in Washington the following week, a visit aimed at reinforcing U.S.–Israeli security cooperation while U.S. sanctions on Iran remain in force. Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri rejected the “experimental zones” proposal, arguing it would prolong occupation and risk internal sectarian clashes. He reiterated demand for a full Israeli pull‑out, the return of displaced persons, prisoner releases and reconstruction, citing the U.S.–brokered framework and the broader U.S.–Iran memorandum calling for an immediate halt to hostilities on all fronts.
