Southwest France wildfires trigger emergency response and aid measures

Since early summer 2026, extensive forest fires have burned hundreds of hectares across the Gironde, Landes, Var and parts of the Drôme, prompting red‑level vigilance in several departments. The flames have forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and caused severe damage to farms, including the displacement of a hundred horses at the Ecuries d’En Hill in Biscarosse, where owner Marine Champeval described the animals as stressed but largely unharmed.

Authorities have mobilised large‑scale resources: more than 300 gendarmes were deployed in the newly launched Operation Nemus to patrol high‑risk forests, supported by helicopters and drones, while a preventive fire column “Occitanie 1” from the Lot department positioned 22 firefighters and seven specialised vehicles in the Pyrénées‑Orientales. In parallel, a suspect, an agricultural worker from the Deux‑Sèvres region, was placed in custody as investigators examine a series of suspicious blazes.

To assist victims, the federation France Assureurs announced exceptional measures, extending the claim filing deadline to 31 August, covering relocation costs for displaced households and accelerating damage assessments. These combined actions aim to curb further ignitions, protect communities and support those affected by the unprecedented wildfires in southwest France.
