French social-democratic primary sees 140,000 voters registered

The social-democratic primary in France has reached its final stages, with 140,282 voters registered for the first round scheduled for October 9 and 10. The five candidates competing are Olivier Faure, Raphaël Glucksmann, Jérôme Guedj, Ségolène Royal, and Emmanuel Maurel.

Recent televised debates have been marked by personal confrontations and strategic disagreements. Tensions rose during the final debate regarding potential alliances with La France Insoumise and personal remarks exchanged between candidates, including a dispute involving Raphaël Glucksmann and Ségolène Royal. While organizers noted that voter registration exceeded expectations, the total number of participants is significantly lower than the 2017 primary, which saw over 1.6 million voters.

Candidates have presented varying visions for the left, covering issues such as immigration, fiscal policy, and education reform. Despite the goal of fostering unity for the 2027 presidential election, the process has highlighted deep divisions regarding leadership and political direction.
