French left-wing primary candidates hold final debate
Five candidates for the French left-wing primary—Raphaël Glucksmann, Olivier Faure, Ségolène Royal, Jérôme Guedj, and Emmanuel Maurel—participated in their final televised debate on BFMTV ahead of the October 9 and 10 vote.
A central point of contention was the potential for an alliance with the radical left party, La France insoumise (LFI). Glucksmann and Guedj advocated for a definitive break with LFI to avoid electoral losses to the far right, while Faure, Royal, and Maurel emphasized the necessity of finding ways to unite the left to implement policies in the Assembly.
The debate was also marked by personal friction. Glucksmann faced criticism and was forced to apologize following the circulation of videos in which he made disparaging remarks about Ségolène Royal. Other topics of discussion included the situation in Ukraine, education, pensions, and nuclear energy.
