Lalique Museum heist in France steals €4‑5 million worth of jewelry

In the early hours of Sunday, 5 July 2026, masked thieves forced the front door of the Lalique Museum in Wingen‑sur‑Moder, Bas‑Rhin, Alsace. They smashed six display cases in the jewellery room and made off with about 20‑27 crystal pieces valued at roughly €4 million to €4.5 million. The alarm system activated, but the private security firm delayed response; a cleaning worker was the first to arrive and called the gendarmerie.

Mayor Christian Dorschner condemned the security lapse, saying the intruders appeared well‑informed. The investigation is being led by the local gendarmerie, supported by the Strasbourg research unit and specialized anti‑cultural‑heritage teams. The museum, which houses over 650 works by René Lalique, announced a temporary closure while damage is assessed and security is reinforced. The robbery follows the high‑profile Louvre heist of October 2025, reviving national debate over museum security.

Authorities are reviewing camera footage and have not yet reported arrests. The stolen items, mostly crystal jewellery without precious stones, are difficult to melt and thus hard to sell on the black market.
