French politicians propose fuel price solutions

French political figures have proposed different strategies to address rising fuel costs. Ian Brossat, a senator and campaign director for Fabien Roussel, has advocated for the nationalization of TotalEnergies. He suggests this move could lower gasoline prices to between €1.60 and €1.70 per liter. However, analysts note that a full nationalization would require paying a control premium of 20% to 30% above market value, potentially costing between €209 billion and €226 billion.

Separately, former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has proposed a mechanism to cap fuel prices between €1.75 and €2.50 per liter. His plan involves a fluctuation band where the state would eliminate taxes if prices exceed €2.50 and recoup those taxes when prices fall below €1.75. De Villepin describes this as a carbon signal mechanism that would adjust tax levels automatically to stabilize prices without costing the state additional funds.
