France 2027 presidential election landscape shifts

As the 2027 French presidential election approaches, the political landscape is characterized by significant fragmentation and economic concern. Marine Le Pen currently leads opinion polls, with an Elabe poll placing her between 34% and 35.5% for the first round. Her closest rival, former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, is polling between 17% and 20.5%.

Economic stability is a central issue, as France faces high public debt. The Maastricht debt ratio reached 117.5% of GDP at the end of Q1 2026, with the national debt totaling 3,536.1 billion euros. The European Commission projects this ratio will rise to 118.1% in 2026.

Political maneuvering is underway to address this fragmentation. Édouard Philippe, leader of the Horizons party, intends to organize a meeting around All Saints' Day to unite right-wing and centrist parties. Meanwhile, within the Rassemblement National, efforts are being made to reconcile internal divisions, including the potential reintegration of Marion Maréchal into the campaign. The election, which will determine the successor to Emmanuel Macron, is scheduled for April 18, 2027, with a potential second round on May 2, 2027.
