French regions tighten fire prevention amid drought

In the Territoire de Belfort, a prefectural decree intensifies forest fire prevention measures as drought and high temperatures raise the risk of ignition. The order restricts outdoor fires, bans burning waste, and advises residents to clear vegetation, avoid discarding cigarettes, and report any fire immediately.

Mayor Bruno Lafon of Biganos, Gironde, called for stronger judicial sanctions against arsonists after more than 3,400 hectares burned this summer. He urged authorities to treat intentional fire‑setting like other serious offenses, citing the Interior Minister’s note that nine out of ten fires have human origins. Lafon highlighted the need for rapid arrests and possible detention for those caught igniting fires.

Both officials stress that preventive actions and tougher penalties are essential to protect France’s forests and public safety during the ongoing dry spell.
