French Senate investigates extracurricular school recruitment and safety scandals

The French Senate has resumed hearings regarding systemic failures in extracurricular school recruitment and safety. The investigation follows reports of widespread violence and sexual misconduct in schools, with 203 criminal investigations currently open in Paris alone. Similar issues have been reported across 70 other departments in France.

In Paris, 17 families represented by the association MeTooEcole have filed a complaint against the City of Paris and its leadership, including Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire, former Mayor Anne Hidalgo, and former first deputy Patrick Bloche. The plaintiffs allege deliberate endangerment, failure to assist persons in danger, and failure to report offenses. They claim city officials were aware of documented warnings and malfunctions regarding extracurricular staff but failed to take adequate action.

Concerns have been raised regarding negligent hiring practices, such as failing to verify criminal records or CVs for staff working with children, including those with disabilities. In response to these scandals, a national initiative will involve questioning 10 million students this year regarding gender-based and sexual violence to strengthen the role of the National Education system as a watchdog.
