French Senate blocks euthanasia bill as political stalemate continues
On 1 July 2026 the Senate’s Social Affairs Committee adopted a motion to reject the draft law granting a "right to aid to die" and called on the government to recognise the political dead‑lock. The committee said it could not continue deliberations, stating “there is no basis to continue the debate on the proposal.” The motion will be put to a vote by the full Senate before the National Assembly discussion scheduled for 7 July.
The National Assembly had already passed the euthanasia measure in a third reading on 30 June, defining eligibility criteria such as adult status, serious incurable illness and a free, informed request. The text also outlines procedural safeguards involving multiple medical opinions and a waiting period. Critics including Catholic leaders, physicians, and disability groups warn the law could expand beyond its original scope, while supporters argue it respects individual freedom. The bill now awaits final Senate approval before becoming law.
