Raphaël Glucksmann wins French social-democratic primary for 2027

Raphaël Glucksmann has emerged as the official candidate for the 2027 French presidential election following a decisive victory in the social-democratic primary. Glucksmann secured 66.17% of the vote in the first round, a significant margin over the runner-up, Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure, who received 14.46%. Ségolène Royal finished third with 7.62% of the vote.

The primary, which saw a total of 120,587 voters participate, was organized jointly by the Socialist Party, Place Publique, and the Gauche républicaine et socialiste. Glucksmann’s victory is viewed as a mandate for his specific political direction, notably his refusal to form an alliance with Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the radical left movement, La France Insoumise. Instead, he has positioned himself as the candidate of the ‘democratic left,’ aiming to build a broader coalition that includes moderate ecologists and centrists to combat the far-right.

While the win marks a major milestone for Glucksmann, he faces the challenge of unifying various factions of the left and securing the necessary resources and grassroots support from the Socialist Party to sustain a national campaign.
