Frenkie de Jong vows Netherlands aim for World Cup 2026 final
Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong said he is focused on helping the Dutch national team reach the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo after Barcelona’s season‑ending loss to Valencia, de Jong affirmed his fitness and ambition, adding, “A final would already be an achievement, and I don’t care who we play.”
He highlighted Barcelona’s recent La Liga title and Spanish Super Cup win, while noting the club’s Champions League exit to Atlético Madrid. Despite a season marked by physical complaints, de Jong expects to be fully fit for the tournament and remains one of coach Ronald Koeman’s key players for the Oranje squad.
De Jong’s remarks mark the first time the Dutch midfielder has publicly set a specific World Cup target, signalling the Netherlands’ desire to return to a final for the first time since 2010.
