Freyja project develops low-cost European anti-ballistic missile system

A new European defense coalition, including Ukraine, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, is developing the Freyja anti-ballistic missile system. A flagship component of this project is the FP-7.x rocket, developed by the Ukrainian company Fire Point.

Designed to be significantly more cost-effective than the Patriot system, the FP-7.x utilizes composite materials to reduce production costs. The rocket features an infrared guidance head from the German company Diehl and has demonstrated capabilities in testing, reaching altitudes of 25 km and speeds of approximately Mach 6.5. This speed allows the system to engage ballistic targets at hypersonic velocities.

In separate developments regarding aerial combat, Russian military units have reported successfully intercepting the Ukrainian Flamingo rocket using machine gun fire. The Flamingo is described as a large, turbojet-powered drone with a length of up to 14 meters and a weight of 6 tons. While Russian forces have successfully downed one such target, military experts warn that the system remains a threat, particularly if used in combined attacks alongside other drones to overwhelm air defense networks.
