Argentina faces industrial layoffs and plant closures

Argentina is experiencing significant industrial instability, marked by mass layoffs and plant closures across various sectors.

In the poultry sector, Granja Tres Arroyos has confirmed the dismissal of 1,250 workers across its plants in Capitán Sarmiento, Esteban Echeverría, and Pilar. The decision follows the expiration of a mandatory conciliation period with the Food Industry Workers Union (STIA). The company, which recently filed for bankruptcy protection, cited the need to adapt its structure to available activity levels.

In the meat industry, the Friar slaughterhouse in Reconquista has implemented a work suspension scheme until late November to avoid further layoffs. This measure, involving a guaranteed hourly wage, responds to a drop in meat consumption and a reduction in slaughtering capacity, which is currently operating at approximately 59% of its potential.

Other industrial struggles include the permanent closure of a walnut processing plant in Sanagasta, affecting 20 families, and ongoing uncertainty at Algodonera Avellaneda, where no buyers have emerged for the company's shares despite the threat of bankruptcy. These events reflect a broader trend of rising costs and declining economic activity within the country.
