Friar meatpacking plant operational crisis

Overview

The Friar meatpacking plant in Reconquista, Santa Fe, has faced prolonged operational difficulties, characterized by a significant decline in production capacity and worker income. Initially, the company implemented voluntary retirements and dismissed 30 administrative staff. During this period, production dropped to approximately 500 animals per day from an installed capacity of 850, and workers saw monthly incomes decrease by nearly 50% due to reduced working hours and the loss of bonuses.

To prevent mass layoffs resulting from decreased beef consumption and lower slaughter activity, the company and the Meat Workers Union later reached an agreement to implement worker suspensions through November 30. This arrangement includes an ‘hourly guarantee’ ensuring workers receive payment for at least 140 hours per month.

Recent reports indicate that the slaughterhouse is currently operating at approximately 59% of its potential capacity. These challenges at Friar are part of a broader trend of industrial instability in Argentina, marked by rising costs and declining economic activity across various sectors.
