Fribourg tradition: Cattle herds return to valleys in Alpabzug

In the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland, the traditional Alpabzug (also known as Désalpe) is currently taking place. This seasonal event marks the end of the summer grazing period, as cattle herds return to the valleys after spending more than four months in the Alps.

The festivities are characterized by decorated cows wearing bells with ornate leather straps and floral arrangements. Local herders often wear traditional clothing, and the processions frequently include horse-drawn carriages, music, and regional markets.

The Fribourg Cantonal Police are present on the roads during these events, where agricultural traditions and daily traffic intersect. These seasonal cattle drives typically occur throughout September and October.
