Frida Kahlo exhibition at London's Tate Modern draws record pre‑sales

London’s Tate Modern opened “Frida: The Making of an Icon,” a major exhibition of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo that runs from late June 2026 through February 2027. The show, presented with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, features more than 30 of Kahlo’s paintings and personal objects, plus a “Fridamania” section displaying over 200 works inspired by her.  Pre‑sale tickets topped 41,000, the highest ever for a Tate Modern show, and it became the museum’s fastest‑selling exhibition. Public art installations across the city, including murals and a Carnaby Street display, accompany the gallery program.

The exhibition has sparked debate about the commercialization of Kahlo’s legacy, with critics noting the prevalence of merchandise such as tote bags. Nonetheless, the show highlights Kahlo’s enduring cultural influence, from her iconic self‑portraits to her role as a feminist and political figure, and reinforces her status as one of Mexico’s most celebrated artists.
