Frida Kahlo London exhibitions
Overview
The Tate Modern’s retrospective “Frida: The Making of an Icon” opened in late June 2026, shattering the museum’s pre‑sale record with more than 41,000 tickets sold before opening. The show pairs Kahlo’s original paintings, personal clothing, jewelry, medical instruments and photographs with over 200 works by later artists who cite her as a cultural touchstone, and will run through January 2027.
A citywide programme accompanies the main exhibition, featuring a Carnaby Street papel‑picado installation, an anamorphic mural by Alejandra Ballesteros, and a second, parallel showcase – “100 FRIDAS para FRIDA” – which opened on 3 September at the Blank Canvas gallery in Fulham. Curated by visual artist Fernando Aroche Bello and the ÁREA 7 initiative, the collective exhibition presents works by one hundred Mexican artists created to honor Kahlo, alongside related murals and street‑level installations across the city.
Scholars have renewed focus on Kahlo’s handwritten correspondence, highlighting her bilingual fluency, intimate lipstick‑kissed notes, and a 1947 memo on U.S. customs duties for her works. These letters are featured in exhibition materials, offering fresh insight into her health, artistic process and personal networks, especially with Diego Rivera.
The programme has sparked debate over the commercialization of Kahlo’s legacy, while reaffirming her enduring influence as a feminist, political and artistic icon.
