Fritz unveils new router design and upcoming FRITZ!OS 8.50 update

Fritz (formerly AVM) has introduced a new generation of hardware and software updates at the IFA trade show. A central highlight is the new DSL/Fiber 7-90 router, which features a minimalist, angular design intended to blend into home environments. This model marks a shift in naming conventions, prioritizing the connection type (DSL/Fiber) followed by the Wi-Fi generation and series number.

In terms of software, the company is preparing for the rollout of FRITZ!OS 8.50, which is targeted for release in October. Current laboratory versions are testing various features, including enhanced smart home routines with geofencing, improved stability, and a new ‘Easy Mode’ for DECT telephones designed to increase accessibility for elderly or less tech-savvy users. The update will also include security improvements and new smart home functionalities, such as automatic power cutoff for sockets when load limits are exceeded.

Additionally, the company is expanding its mobile offerings with laboratory updates for the FRITZ!Box 6850 5G, 4G, and LTE models. Users can also manage certain router functions via specific telephone keypad codes, such as toggling Wi-Fi or performing factory resets.
