FritzBox routers: disable remote access and install FritzOS 8.25 update

The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) advises users of AVM FritzBox routers to turn off the remote‑access feature, which allows the router’s web interface to be reached from outside the home network. Leaving this function enabled can expose the device to brute‑force attacks, zero‑day exploits and potential inclusion in botnets. The article outlines the steps to disable remote access via the router’s settings menu.

At the same time, AVM has released FritzOS version 8.25 for the FritzBox 6850 5G and FritzBox 6860 5G models. The update does not add major new features but improves stability, mobile‑network performance, and fixes numerous bugs, including issues with WireGuard, parental controls, Wi‑Fi onboarding, and VoIP certificates. The firmware can be installed directly from the router’s user interface.
