Friuli earthquake 50th anniversary sparks debate over commemoration

The 50th anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake has drawn contrasting reactions regarding its commemoration.

Sandra Savino, Undersecretary for Economy and Finance, praised the reconstruction process as a significant chapter in Italy’s civil and institutional history. Speaking at the second edition of the Premio Sussidiarietà in Tolmezzo, Savino described the ‘Friuli model’ as a successful collaboration between the state, local administrations, volunteers, and citizens that transformed an emergency into social and economic rebirth. She highlighted the roles of the Civil Protection, Firefighters, and the National Alpine Association.

Conversely, the anniversary has faced criticism regarding the nature of the organized events. Some observers have expressed frustration over what they perceive as excessive spending and the transformation of a solemn memorial into a high-profile social showcase. Specific concerns were raised regarding the costs of organizing a memorial Mass for the nearly 1,000 victims, which reportedly cost nearly 300,000 euros, leading to accusations of commercializing a tragic historical milestone.
