Friuli earthquake 50th anniversary commemorations

The 50th anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake has prompted various commemorative activities and public debates in Italy.

Initial commemorations included an exhibition in Oseacco titled ‘Cantù – Resia · Operazione Amicizia – 1976-2026’. The event utilized historical photographs and documents to highlight the emergency response and the ‘Operation Friendship’ bond between the towns of Cantù and Resia, which led to the creation of the Villaggio Lario.

As the anniversary progressed, the nature of the commemorations became a subject of debate. Undersecretary for Economy and Finance Sandra Savino praised the ‘Friuli model’ as a successful collaboration between the state, local administrations, and citizens that facilitated social and economic rebirth. However, critics have raised concerns regarding the cost of organized events, specifically citing the nearly 300,000 euro cost of a memorial Mass for the approximately 1,000 victims. These observers have accused organizers of commercializing a tragic milestone and turning a solemn memorial into a high-profile social showcase.
