Friuli Venezia Giulia fuel subsidy fraud uncovered

An investigation by the Guardia di Finanza in Udine has uncovered a large-scale fraud involving fuel subsidies in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The scheme resulted in the illicit distribution of over one million liters of fuel and fraudulent reimbursements exceeding 240,000 euros.

The investigation, conducted in collaboration with the regional government and the Udine and Pordenone Chamber of Commerce, identified two main methods of deception. Four service station managers were reported for simulating fictitious fuel deliveries, performing unauthorized double swipes of subsidy cards, or canceling real transactions to reload them with higher quantities to claim larger regional reimbursements.

Additionally, 25 private citizens were sanctioned for 1,665 illegal refueling incidents totaling approximately 13,000 liters. These individuals used subsidy cards for vehicles they no longer owned due to sales, exports, or deregistration. In response to these findings, the region is moving toward a new validation system using QR codes to strengthen prevention and control.
