Fuel fraud investigations in Italy

Overview

Authorities in Italy have conducted separate investigations into fuel subsidy and card fraud schemes in the Friuli Venezia Giulia and Bolzano regions.

In Friuli Venezia Giulia, a Guardia di Finanza investigation uncovered a scheme involving the illicit distribution of over one million liters of fuel and fraudulent reimbursements exceeding 240,000 euros. The fraud involved service station managers simulating fictitious deliveries or manipulating subsidy card transactions. Additionally, 25 private citizens were sanctioned for using subsidy cards for vehicles they no longer owned. In response, the region is planning to implement a QR code validation system.

In Bolzano, the ‘Karburant’ investigation led by the Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza revealed a scheme where a driver for a food distribution company and a gas station manager allegedly used company fuel cards to simulate non-existent diesel and AdBlue purchases. This operation caused approximately 20,000 euros in damages to the company, and police seized 41,050 euros in cash during searches.
