Friuli Venezia Giulia leads Italy in monumental tree protection

The Friuli Venezia Giulia region has reinforced its position as the Italian region with the highest number of monumental trees. Following a recent update to regional lists, the area now holds 572 records covering a total of 1,695 protected specimens, including 39 newly added entries.

In addition to monumental trees, the region has expanded its registry of “notable trees”—a category created by Friuli Venezia Giulia to identify and protect specimens that may become monumental in the future. This category now includes 305 records and 1,010 specimens, following the addition of 42 new entries.

Regional Councilor for Infrastructure and Territory, Cristina Amirante, noted that these protected trees are widely distributed, with nearly 75 percent of the region's municipalities hosting at least one protected specimen. The administrative process for the update is nearing completion, with the regional president's decree currently awaiting signature following approval from the relevant Ministry and the Superintendency.
