Friuli Venezia Giulia forest and tree conservation

Overview

The Friuli Venezia Giulia region is expanding its environmental conservation efforts through the protection of ancient forests and significant tree specimens.

Initial efforts focused on the recognition of ancient forest ecosystems, including Croseraz Val Bona, Pian dele Stele, and Bosco Vintulins. These areas joined the National Network of Ancient Forests to preserve high biodiversity and natural evolution. These initiatives were supported by the University of Udine and the ‘Foresta Tour PEFC 2026’ to promote sustainable forest management.

Subsequently, the region reinforced its status as a leader in tree protection by updating its registries. The region now maintains 572 records for monumental trees, totaling 1,695 specimens, and has expanded its registry of ‘notable trees’ to include 305 records and 1,010 specimens. These protected trees are widely distributed, with nearly 75 percent of the region's municipalities hosting at least one protected specimen.
