Frontex deploys patrol boats to English Channel for migration rescue

Frontex, the European Union’s border agency, is deploying patrol vessels to the English Channel and the North Sea to support search and rescue operations. This move follows high-level discussions between French and British leaders regarding irregular migration management.

The deployment includes two Spanish patrol boats scheduled to operate from September through October, followed by a Lithuanian vessel that will remain through January to assist French naval patrols. The reinforcement is intended to bolster operational capacity as smugglers continue to use overcrowded and unseaworthy small craft to navigate the busy shipping lanes.

The initiative aligns with a three-year security pact in which the United Kingdom agreed to provide France with up to £660 million (approximately $892 million) to strengthen coastal enforcement. Additionally, the two nations have implemented a pilot framework involving the exchange of migrants to manage returns and asylum processing.
