Migration trends: EU arrivals drop while Mediterranean fatalities surge

New data from Frontex and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reveal a complex trend in European migration during 2026. Frontex reports that irregular border crossings into the European Union fell by 37% during the first seven months of the year, with approximately 61,000 detections recorded. This decline was observed across most major routes, including a 55% drop on the central Mediterranean route and a 60% decrease on the West African route. However, the Western Mediterranean route was the notable exception, seeing an increase in irregular entries.

Despite the overall reduction in arrivals, the IOM warns that migration journeys have become significantly more lethal. In the first four months of 2026, fatalities and disappearances surged in key areas. Deaths in the central Mediterranean rose by 111% to 821 people, while deaths in the eastern Mediterranean tripled to 244. IOM Deputy Director General Ugochi Daniels noted that fewer arrivals do not equate to safer journeys, as traffickers continue to exploit migrants on increasingly dangerous and prolonged routes.
