Milan political tension rises over center-right mayoral candidates

Political tensions are rising within Italy's major coalitions regarding upcoming municipal elections and national strategy.

In Milan, the center-right coalition is facing a split over the mayoral candidacy for 2027. Matteo Salvini of the Lega has proposed holding coalition primaries to let citizens decide, a move strongly opposed by Forza Italia. Forza Italia is backing Matteo Perego, while the Lega supports Silvia Sardone. Alessandro Sorte of Forza Italia suggested that if an agreement is not reached, the Lega could run its own candidate.

Simultaneously, leaders of the progressive opposition, known as 'Campo Largo', met in Rome to accelerate their unified program. The group, including Elly Schlein (PD), Giuseppe Conte (M5S), and leaders from Avs and +Europa, aims to finalize a common platform within two weeks. Despite efforts toward unity, significant disagreements remain regarding foreign policy, specifically concerning military aid to Ukraine.
