Italian center-right municipal election candidate disputes

Overview

Political maneuvering within Italy’s center-right coalitions continues across various municipal contexts. In Milan, tensions persist regarding the 2027 mayoral candidacy, where the Lega has proposed coalition primaries to allow citizen participation—a move opposed by Forza Italia, which supports Matteo Perego. The Lega is currently backing Silvia Sardone and may run its own candidate if no agreement is reached.

In Como, the center-right is evaluating candidates, weighing political figures like Fratelli d'Italia provincial president Stefano Molinari against civic candidates such as Enrico Gelpi. Concurrently, the center-left in Como is discussing potential alliances involving the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement.

Other regional developments include preparations for the 2027 elections in Salerno, where center-right leaders are meeting to establish a unified method for identifying candidates. In Conegliano, Fratelli d’Italia has proposed creating a unified center-right program followed by internal primaries to select a mayoral candidate.
